To meet the DSM-IV criteria for Oppositional Defiant Disorder your child has to display Oppositional Defiant Disorder behavior "more often" than other children of his age. Since this definition is still vague, I have added what is usually considered "often" in most age groups.
Keep in mind that children do go through stages as they grow and whereas twice a week may be often for a seven-year-old, it might be normal for a four-year-old.
Which Oppositional Defiant Disorder Behaviors Does Your Child Display?
Loses temper at least twice a week
Argues with adults at least twice a week
Actively defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests or rules
at least twice a week


Deliberately annoys people at least four times a week
Blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior at least once during the last three months
Is touchy or easily annoyed by others at least twice a week
Is angry and resentful at least four times per week
Acts spiteful or vindictive at least once during the last three months
If your child displays four out of these eight behaviors, then he or she might have Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
