  • Choosing an Appropriate Backpack for your Child’s Back Health

    Article by Dr Maya Pande

Children are heading back to school and knapsacks are being hauled out from underneath the bed.

So what are the best choices? Shoulder and messenger style bags can cause muscle strain because they are worn only on one shoulder and a wheeled backpack can be difficult and awkward to get up and down staircases. When worn properly, knapsacks are really the most appropriate kind of bag that a young person can use; however, even they can cause problems for the person if they are loaded or worn improperly.

Firstly, what type of knapsack you should purchase. You need a bag that has lots of storage on the outside so that you can distribute stuff more evenly. And, it should be constructed of a lightweight material, like canvas or vinyl, with two big shoulder straps. Waist or hip straps are also necessary to think about when selecting a knapsack. Don’t forget, the size of the backpack should be in proportion to the size of the person wearing it!

Next, how should you pack your backpack? A lot of children wear a pack that is much too big for their bodies. I’m positive that you’ve lifted up your child’s bag and had to use two hands! Most doctors and therapists agree that a knapsack for a child should weigh only 10-15% of their body weight. Therefore,an 80lb student should have a bag that weighs no more than 8-10 lbs. This can be achieved by ensuring to pack only the items that they require for that day. To maintain comfort, load the heavier, flatter things closest to the body and put the odd-shaped items on the outside or at the top of the knapsack, away from the back.

Now that the knapsack is packed, it has to be mounted. You need to put the knapsack on an level surface that is level with the waist. Lift the bag on, putting on one shoulder strap at a time, and then fit them so they are adjusted comfortably. The bag should fit not too tight but snug against the back and you should be able to slip your hand between the knapsack and their back. And, using the waist straps will improve stability. Remember never wear a knapsack over only one shoulder.

Carrying an poorly distributed heavy load can result in poor posture and muscle pains, fatique, headaches or back pain. So take the time to check your son or daughter’s knapsack and make sure to pack it light and wear it right!
